Meals for 9-month-olds: menu, textures and ideas
Your baby is 9 months old and you're wondering what to offer now?
At 9 months, baby often has a few weeks of solids behind them. They eat more, try new textures and get more skilled with their fingers. Here are some guidelines, a sample menu and meal ideas to support them.
What changes around 9 months
- Picking up small pieces: baby often starts picking up food between their thumb and index finger. You can offer smaller pieces, as well as sticks.
- More textures: soft pieces, pasta, meatballs, chopped or mashed foods. Varying textures helps them learn to chew.
- A clearer routine: many babies now eat 3 meals a day, with a snack if needed.
- Milk is still important: breast milk or formula continues. Health Canada says whole cow's milk (3.25%) can be introduced between 9 and 12 months.
Sample menu for a 9-month-old
- Breakfast: blueberry fritters
- Lunch: tender meatballs and pasta spirals
- Snack: banana and berry bites
- Dinner: salmon bites with green vegetable noodles
This is an example for inspiration, not a rule: follow baby's appetite.
